At 4LP, our projects’ success begins long before the first wire is laid or the first protective measure is installed. It starts with thorough planning and estimations that Gregory Cavalier, our Estimator, knows a lot about. Starting as a farmhand, Greg’s journey is one of ambition, growth, and a deep-seated belief in the impact of our work beyond just lightning and surge protection. I sat down with Greg for a quick and candid conversation to learn more about estimation, only to realize he’s not just approachable and easy to talk to; he’s someone whose enthusiasm for life is everything he does: from the bids he makes to the melodies he composes (because he also produces music).
What exactly does an estimator for 4LP do?
It involves a lot. From analyzing projects that come our way, understanding the plans and specs, and then determining the costs of materials and labor. I’m responsible for planning out the entire job in our program, putting together proposals, and negotiating with other estimators from different companies.
How did you first get involved with 4LP, and what drew you to the field of lightning protection?
My journey to 4LP began through a connection with a friend in 2015 when I was looking for a new job. My interest in lightning protection was piqued, leading me from working on a farm to becoming a lead, then a project manager, and finally an estimator. It’s been a path of staying humble and committed and not giving up when I wanted to. A lot of people say “Work is work,” but I say it’s bigger than that–bigger than lightning and surge protection. It’s about helping people become better, safer.
Can you describe a typical day for you as an estimator at 4LP?
I, first, catch up with Ryan about upcoming jobs, what’s in the pipeline. Prioritizing bids, especially those due immediately, is crucial. The day involves a lot of multitasking, from handling spontaneous customer requests for quotes to working on proposals until it’s time to head home.
Estimating seems like it can be difficult. Can you talk about a particularly tough project and its rewards?
One of the most challenging projects involved estimating multiple buildings for one company, some requiring lightning protection, others not, all without clear building plans. It required a bit of creative measurement using Google Maps. The complexity of accurately estimating in such scenarios is tough but rewarding when we successfully secure and complete the project.
When you’re not working, what do you like to do?
Family comes first for me. Whether it’s playing board games with my kids or just enjoying time together, those moments are precious. As many people who work with me know, I have a passion for music, from making tracks to playing drums, and I take great care in looking out for my close friends and family, always encouraging them.
In your view, what sets 4LP apart from other lightning and surge protection companies?
It’s the quality of our work and the thought we put into each project. We install systems as if we were doing it for our own homes, focusing on how well it works and how it looks.
Any hobbies or skills your colleagues might find surprising?
Besides being deeply involved in music, I’m quite handy and have built monitor stands among other things. My drumming skills are also something I take pride in, capable of playing at a professional level.
From your perspective, what’s a common misconception about lightning protection?
Many think it attracts lightning, but in reality, it provides a safe path to ground. It prevents damage.
How would you describe the team environment at 4LP, and its contribution to the company’s success?
Our team is all about transparency and good communication, especially as we go through transitional phases. This openness makes everyone cooperative and efficient in their work, critical to our collective success.
Why is lightning and surge protection critical for homeowners or business owners?
It protects against the damages of Mother Nature, really providing peace of mind. There’s also the long-term savings by preventing potential destruction. Surge protection, in particular, offers comfort during storms. You can sleep better knowing your property and assets are secure.
