At 4LP, those who make up our team fuels our success, especially when it comes to the individuals leading our projects. One of those individuals happens to be Ryan Hopkins, our Project Manager, who’s always eager to push himself to the next level. His approach is rather direct – he’s the kind of guy who knows exactly what he wants, how to achieve it, and wastes no time in getting there. Despite his straightforwardness, he’s full of fun energy and ready to motivate his guys. Ryan’s journey from the field to the forefront of project management showcases the hard work at the heart of our operations.
I had the chance to sit down with Ryan for a light-hearted conversation about his career, life outside of work, and the driving forces behind his dedication to 4LP.
How did you start your journey with 4LP, and what led you to your current role as Project Manager?
It all began with a referral from a friend who was already part of the 4LP team. I started out as a helper, quickly moved into a temporary leadership role to test my capabilities, then to a lead installer (lead-in), and after a couple of years as a lead-in, I saw an opportunity to step into project management, so I did. It’s been a major shift from hands-on installation to managing details and paperwork – a whole different ballpark– and I’m now entering my third or fourth year in this role.
Can you describe what a typical day looks like for you at 4LP?
My day usually kicks off early. If I’m in early enough, I lend a hand to the guys, helping them load up and get on their way. After that, my focus shifts to emails, making sure everything is in order, followed by phone calls to check on the progress of ongoing projects. The rest of my day is spent on project coordination, from scheduling to troubleshooting any issues that come up.
What’s your approach when it comes to managing 4LP projects?
I try to keep the team busy with meaningful work. If they’re out there working, then we’re moving in the right direction. It’s about making sure that we have projects lined up that are not only billable but also manageable for the team.
Outside of work, what passions or hobbies do you enjoy?
I used to spend a lot of time hunting and fishing, but with kids, priorities shift. These days, it’s more about family time, maybe riding four-wheelers when we get a chance. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to put time aside for my hobbies outside of tending to my family.
Is there a particular moment in your career at 4LP that stands out as memorable or impactful?
Definitely. Going from an installer to project manager made me realize the difference between doing the work and overseeing it. It taught me the importance of clear, informed communication and understanding the challenges from both sides of a project.
Let’s have a little fun. If a movie about your life and work was made, what song would be on the soundtrack to describe you?
“Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne. It’s fast-paced, unpredictable – always keeping me on my toes.
What aspect of your job as a project manager makes you feel proud?
Hearing that the team had an easy, straightforward installation because everything was set up properly is incredibly rewarding. I love hearing that from the guys.
Through your experience as a project manager, what invaluable lesson have you learned?
Not everyone shares the same work ethic or attitude, which was a big realization for me.
How would you describe the team dynamic at 4LP?
We have great communication and understanding of expectations. It’s all about that, too, having an environment where everyone knows what’s needed and works together to achieve it.
Any final remarks about your time with 4LP or thoughts you’d like to share?
Just that 4LP is a place of opportunity. There’s room to grow for anyone who’s willing to put in the work and show their drive. I’m proof of that. We also really care about what we do here. Lightning and surge protection is important, and we want to make sure you’re covered
